Wedding vows, example

You taught me that you don't ruin good coffee with cold milk. Since then you've warmed the milk for me every morning, even though you only drink tea.

I promise to listen, even when I think I already know the answer. I promise we won't take an argument to bed. And I promise that from tomorrow, I'll warm the milk.

What wedding vows need to do

Wedding vows aren't a speech to the guests. You speak directly to the person you're marrying, without greeting the room and without a toast. The guests listen, but they aren't the ones you're talking to.

The strongest vows mix big and small. “I will stand by you when things get hard” gains weight when it sits next to something only the two of you know: the warm milk in the morning, the light one of you always leaves on. Vows work best in the present tense. “I promise you” carries more than “I will try”.

How your vows can be structured

  1. Opening: a first line spoken straight to your partner.
  2. The two of you: what makes you who you are together, shown through a small everyday detail.
  3. A memory: a moment that explains why you're standing here today.
  4. The promises: big ones and small ones, each in its own sentence.
  5. The ending: a last line, ideally one you choose yourself.

Tips for the moment itself

  • Write your vows on a card or nice paper, not on your phone.
  • Speak more slowly than feels right, and leave a short pause after each promise.
  • Agree beforehand who goes first, and whether you'll share your vows in advance or surprise each other.
  • If your voice breaks, take a breath and carry on. Nobody in the room expects you to stay calm.

How long should wedding vows be?
We suggest a minute and a half. In the interview you choose anything from half a minute to three minutes. If you both write your own vows, aim for a similar length so they feel balanced.
Where can I say my own vows?
At a celebrant-led ceremony, at a civil ceremony where there's room for it, or just between the two of you. At a religious ceremony personal words add to the traditional vows rather than replacing them. Check beforehand with your registrar, celebrant or minister whether and when you can speak.
Can I end with a particular line?
Yes. Enter it in the interview and it will be the last sentence of your vows, word for word.
Can you add words for the ring exchange?
Yes, if you choose it in the interview. We then add a short line for the moment you exchange rings.
