I knew on a Tuesday in February. Anna had a fever, I'd made soup, and after the first spoonful she said: ‘This is terrible. Stay anyway.’

What this speech needs to do

A groom speech has two parts, and both count. The first is thanks: to the parents, the wedding party, everyone who helped and the guests who came. The second belongs to the person you've just married. There you stop talking about them and speak directly to them.

Many grooms underestimate the first part and get lost in long lists of names. Better: group people and give each thank-you a reason. “Mum and Dad, thank you for giving up three weekends in May to help us move” sticks. “Thanks to everyone who helped” doesn't.

How your speech can be structured

  1. Opening: a short, personal first line before the thanks begin.
  2. Thanks: to families, wedding party, helpers and guests, grouped and specific.
  3. The story: a moment from your time together, perhaps the one when you knew.
  4. The couple: words spoken directly to your wife or husband.
  5. The toast: to your partner, to the guests, to the bridesmaids or to both of you, depending on your tradition.

Humour, but kind

A smile here and there works well. Jokes about your partner stay loving and are never about looks or in-laws. If you're unsure, choose a lower humour level in the interview. The speech won't turn stiff. It will turn honest.

How long should a groom speech be?
We suggest 4 minutes. In the interview you choose anything from 2 to 8 minutes. The thanks often take more room than you expect, so we group people rather than naming everyone one by one.
Who should I thank?
Usually the parents, the wedding party, everyone who helped and the guests who travelled. In the UK the groom traditionally also toasts the bridesmaids. Each thank-you gets a concrete reason, and names appear only if you give them in the interview.
Can we give the speech together as a couple?
Yes. Tell us in the interview that you're speaking together. The speech then alternates between you and shows who says which line.
How do I speak to my wife or husband directly?
In the second part you turn to them and speak to them, not about them. It's built on your answers about how you met, what you love about them and when you knew.
What if I'm nervous?
That's normal. Read the speech aloud a few times, ideally with a timer. From the Standard plan you can print cue cards and practise with the teleprompter in practice mode.
