Birthday, example

The night before my tenth birthday, the cake slid off the kitchen table. It was eleven o'clock, there was snow outside and every shop was shut. Mum tied on her apron and said: ‘Leave it with me.’

The next morning there was a new cake on the table. It was lopsided. It was the best one I've ever had.

What makes a good birthday speech

A good birthday speech celebrates the person, not the number. The age is at most a reason to look back, never the punchline. What the guests want to hear are the things that make this person who they are: the phrase they always say, the quirk everyone smiles about, the story everyone has heard and still wants to hear again.

At milestone birthdays several people often speak: a partner, children, siblings, old friends. Agree beforehand who tells which story. Three speeches with the same anecdote aren't much of a present.

When the speech fits in

The host usually says a short welcome at the start. Toasts to the birthday person fit well before the meal or when the cake arrives. At the end there's a toast, such as “To Helen.”, or the cue for everyone to sing.

A speech for someone, or for yourself

  • A toast to the birthday person: you tell everyone who this person is, with a few milestones, one story and a wish.
  • A speech at your own party: you're the host. You welcome people, say thank you, look back briefly and then release your guests to the food and the party. Self-deprecation works, showing off doesn't.

How long should a birthday speech be?
Most birthday toasts last two to five minutes. A speech at your own party is often shorter still. In the interview we suggest a length that suits your role.
Do I have to mention their age?
No. If you leave the age blank in the interview, the speech won't state or guess one. Jokes about age only appear if you choose more humour, and even then they stay kind and never touch on health or decline.
Does it work for a milestone birthday?
Yes. For a milestone, a short look back at the chapters that shaped the person fits well. The interview asks about them, and the speech turns them into images rather than a CV.
Can the speech rhyme?
You can choose a short poem or rhyme in the interview. We don't write the whole speech in rhyme, because forced rhymes push the stories out.
It's a surprise party. What should I watch out for?
Don't share anything the birthday person wouldn't want everyone to hear. In the interview you can list anything that must not be mentioned.
