Twenty years ago I promised myself I'd run a marathon by the time I was fifty. I got as far as buying the trainers.

But I did manage something else, and it's sitting right here: people who have put up with me since primary school, since my first job or since my last house move. Thank you for being here.

What this speech needs to do

At your own birthday you're the host, so your speech has a different job from your guests' speeches. You welcome people, you say thank you, you look back and ahead for a moment, and then you hand the evening back.

The biggest trap is the list. If you try to thank everyone individually, you'll lose the room after the fifth name. Group people together and name a few with a reason that shows you've really noticed them.

A few tips for the evening

  • Speak early, while everyone is there and paying attention.
  • Have a glass ready, but put it down while you speak.
  • If someone speaks before you, pick up a line from their speech. It feels spontaneous and warm.
