Wedding anniversary speech, example

You met in 1974 at a dance on Brighton Pier. Dad says he asked Mum to dance. Mum says she asked him, because he was taking far too long.

Fifty years on, it's the one question you still haven't settled.

What this speech needs to do

An anniversary speech tells how two people have shared a life. You don't need to work through every year. Three to five chapters are enough: how it all began, the first home, the years with children or at work, a journey, a move, a ritual. Add one or two stories in which everyone recognises the couple.

What often moves people most is the question of what makes the two of them work. The answer rarely lies in big words, usually in small things: who makes the tea, how they argue, how they make up.

How your speech can be structured

  1. Opening: a greeting to the couple and the guests, then a first image.
  2. The couple: how the two of them met.
  3. The chapters: three to five chapters of their life together.
  4. The story: a moment that shows what they're like.
  5. What makes them work: the secret that isn't one.
  6. Wishes: for the years ahead together.
  7. The toast: for example “To Pat and Graham.”

Then your speech is more of a love letter with guests. You thank everyone who came at the start, and then speak directly to your partner. Instead of wishes, a renewed promise fits at the end, small and honest.

How long should the speech be?
