What this speech needs to do

Your own leaving speech has a simple job: say thank you and leave well. The people in the room have spent years with you. They want to hear what you're taking with you, who you're thinking of and what you wish them.

The best leaving speeches are generous and short. Generous means you thank people specifically, including the ones who are rarely in the spotlight. Short means you tell one story instead of ten and let everyone get to the cake.

How your speech can be structured

  1. Opening: an image from your time here, ideally with a wink.
  2. Looking back: a few chapters and highlights, not a timeline.
  3. The story: a moment that shows what this time meant to you.
  4. Thanks: to groups and individuals, each with a reason.
  5. Words of farewell: what you'd like to leave with the people staying.
  6. The toast: to the team, and then the invitation to cake or drinks.

A few tips for the day

  • Speak early in the event, while everyone is still there.
  • Keep your speech on cards or a sheet of paper, not on your phone.
  • If your voice goes, pause. It only shows that this time meant something to you.

How long should my leaving speech be?
We suggest 3 minutes. In the interview you choose anything from 1 to 8 minutes. Most people will be standing, and the cake is waiting.
Who should I thank?
Groups of people and a few by name, each with a concrete reason. Remember the teams that are easy to overlook, such as reception, IT or facilities.
There were conflicts. Should I mention them?
No. A leaving speech isn't the place to settle scores. The speech stays gracious, even if your answers hint at difficult times.
Can I invite everyone for cake or drinks?
Yes. If it's in your answers, the speech ends with the invitation.
I'm retiring. Does this work too?
