Our first week at university: a shared kitchen and one fridge for six people. Julia had stuck a note on her shelf: ‘Just ask. I share everything.’ So I asked. We've shared everything since.

What this speech needs to do

Your speech starts with your friendship and ends with the couple. The room wants to understand why you are the one standing up: how you met, what you've been through together, what you know about her or him that others don't.

A good maid of honour speech is warm, funny and specific. Every wedding has heard “we used to go out every weekend”. Much stronger is a moment only the two of you shared: the note on the fridge, the missed train, the phone call at midnight.

How your speech can be structured

  1. Opening: an image from your friendship that makes people curious straight away.
  2. Introduction: who you are and how long you've known each other.
  3. Your connection: what holds your friendship together, shown through one detail.
  4. The story: a moment that shows who she or he really is.
  5. The couple: how you met the partner and what you've noticed in your friend since.
  6. A wish: something that grows out of your story.
  7. The toast: for example “To Julia and David.”

Working with the best man

In many weddings, especially in the US, the maid of honour and best man speak one after the other. Swap notes on your stories beforehand and agree on the order. Two speeches that complement each other land better than two that compete. Agree on length too: if both of you speak for eight minutes, it gets long for the guests.
