When I was eight, Peggy taught me to bake bread. I remember the kneading, and the waiting, and her voice: ‘Bread doesn't like to be rushed, and neither do I.’

What this speech needs to do

When you speak for your family, you speak for many people who can't find words right now. It's a heavy task, and nobody expects you to do it perfectly. A good eulogy isn't polished. It's honest, calm and specific.

Don't try to tell a whole life. Choose a few chapters that shaped the person and one or two memories in which everyone recognises them. A favourite saying, a ritual, a place where you could always find her: details like these stay with people after the service is over.

How your eulogy can be structured

  1. Opening: a calm greeting and a first image of the person.
  2. Tribute: who he or she was, shown through details.
  3. Life journey: three to five chapters, told as pictures.
  4. A memory: the moment that says the most about them.
  5. What remains: what they gave you to carry on.
  6. Thanks: to everyone who has come, and to those who cared for them, if you'd like.
  7. Words of farewell: quiet final sentences, spoken directly to the person if you wish.

What to settle beforehand

  • Is a minister or celebrant also speaking, and how much time is set aside for you?
  • Which view of faith suits the service and the family?
  • Is there anything the family would rather not hear?
  • Who should be named, such as grandchildren or the people who cared for them?
  • Who will hold a copy of your speech in case you need a moment?

How long should the eulogy be?
We suggest 5 minutes. In the interview you choose anything from 2 to 12 minutes. Eulogies are spoken more slowly and with more pauses, and we allow for that in the speaking time.
Do I have to mention the illness or the last months?
No. The interview asks whether you want to say anything about the last period of their life and what must not be mentioned. Without your yes, neither appears. The speech never speculates about the cause of death.
Can I speak directly to them at the end?
Yes. Many eulogies end with a few words spoken directly to the person who has died. The speech does this if it fits your answers and your family.
Can I include a poem or a Bible verse?
Yes. Enter the text word for word in the interview. We use other people's texts exactly as you enter them, and we never make up quotes.
What if I start crying while I speak?
That's all right, and nobody in the room will mind. The speech builds in pauses at the emotional moments. Give a copy to someone beforehand who can read on for you if needed.
